Perched at 1,095 metres above sea level on the rim of the Curral das Freiras caldera — Madeira's most dramatic volcanic crater — Eira do Serrado is the island's definitive highland retreat. On clear mornings, the hotel floats above a sea of cloud with the villages of Curral das Freiras far below. On misty ones, you're entirely inside the weather.
Location
Eira do Serrado sits at the viewpoint above the Valley of the Nuns, one of Madeira's most visited and most atmospheric inland destinations. The drive up from Funchal (30 minutes) winds through Eucalyptus forest and passes several of the island's best levada trailheads. Guests are as likely to arrive booted and pole-equipped as they are in hire cars.
The Stay
- 64 rooms and suites, most with floor-to-ceiling caldera views
- Full-service spa with indoor pool, sauna, and treatment rooms
- Restaurant serving classic Madeiran mountain cuisine — espetada, carne de vinha d'alhos, and seasonal vegetable dishes from local farms
- Outdoor viewpoint terrace — one of the most photographed spots on the island
For Groups and Events
The hotel is well-equipped for corporate retreats, incentive groups, and small conferences seeking a setting that does the talking for them. Funchal's conference infrastructure is 30 minutes away; the mountain setting provides the contrast.
Practical
Year-round operation. The mountain road can be affected by fog and occasional ice in winter — the hotel advises on conditions on arrival. Parking on-site. Funchal transfers available on request.
